February's MAGAM is Finished!

I finally finished the February garment.  I made McCalls 4097 view A.  It was easy to make and I would consider making another one if I can get the size right.  I did make a few changes to the pattern.  On the pattern, the sleeves and the bottom of the top have a split seam.  I decided to just sew to the end and leave the split out.  I also added an extra inch to the length of the sleeves and two inches to the length of the top.

The top looks a little big but since the fabric is a cotton blend, it should hopefully shrink a little when washed.  I'm not sure about that neckline.  It's too big for my tastes.  My bra straps show on both sides.  The neckline could have been adjusted by 1 1/2 inches on both sides.  Next time I'll have to adjust the neckline.  Since I'm not the best sewer, I wonder if there's a way to add a fake collar.

I'm always trying to figure out the front from the back on round neck shirts.  However, I'm sensitive to scratchy labels.  So I decided to stitch a design on the back facing.  It looks kind of cute.  May have to make that my signature label for everything else I sew.

I don't know what my next project will be.  Maybe a skirt.  I won't have to worry about visible bra straps or giant leg pants.

  1. Fran, maybe on both sides you can do a finished insert, similar to a gusset. It'll fit exactly as the bra strap, but make it a little wider and center it perfectly even. Some RTW tops come with a similar insert.

  2. What a great idea to sew a design in so that you can tell front from back - I might have to borrow this idea. If you are happy with the garment save for the neck I would make it again. Most of us have to learn the personal adjustments we need to improve fit through trial and error. I like Dorothy,s suggestion I would have redrawn the neckline so that it covered your bra strap.

  3. Fran,
I made this pattern earlier and had the small problem with the wide neckline. You also have narrow shoulders. I brought the shoulders in 2 inches and it works great now. Now, my bra straps never show. I posted a picture of my dress I made using McCalls 4097. The review is here: http://sewing.patternreview.com/review/pattern/72040 also you will see the pictures on my flicker file. Once, I tweeted my pattern, I made several dresses and tops from the pattern.

  4. I love the color and I think the top fits well. Anything with cotton will shrink so having extra ease is a good thing. I have a problem with too-wide necklines too. Once you establish your personal neckline measurement, add 1-2 inches for ease, then use that as a base for all of your pattern necklines.

  5. Love your top.. I also love your putting the little heart stitching on the facing.to tell front from back.. I have twins, and when I make them outfits that are just alike, this would be great. thanks for sharing.
